10Software Developers Are Now More Valuable To Companies Than Money, Says Survey (cnbc.com) null/SLASHDOT/0102640098 70\r

5i An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNBC:\r
6i \r
7i > As our global economy increasingly comes to run on\r
8i technology-enabled rails and every company becomes a tech\r
9i company, demand for high-quality software engineers is at an\r
10i all-time high. A recent study from [1]Stripe and Harris Poll\r
11i found that 61 percent of C-suite executives believe access to\r
12i developer talent is a threat to the success of their business.\r
13i Perhaps more surprisingly -- as we mark a decade after the\r
14i financial crisis -- [2]this threat was even ranked above\r
15i capital constraints . And yet, despite being many\r
16i corporations' most precious resource, developer talents are\r
17i all too often squandered. Collectively, companies today lose\r
18i upward of $300 billion a year paying down "technical debt," as\r
19i developers pour time into maintaining legacy systems or\r
20i dealing with the ramifications of bad software. This is\r
21i especially worrisome, given the outsized impact developers\r
22i have on companies' chances of success. Software developers\r
23i don't have a monopoly on good ideas, but their skill set makes\r
24i them a uniquely deep source of innovation, productivity and\r
25i new economic connections. When deployed correctly, developers\r
26i can be economic multipliers -- coefficients that dramatically\r
27i ratchet up the output of the teams and companies of which\r
28i they're a part.\r
